There has been, I feel, an overload of Jazz for its listeners. Various schools have developed, but the variation seems to be that of style rather than musical qualities. Being a passive listener I could never really tell what is really happening in the scene.

No other genre provides so much freedom to the performer - both in terms of tonality and rhythm. But I guess some artists have taken advantage of the more than average politeness of the listeners. Bump notes, whacky rhythms may not work anywhere else, but in Jazz they're supposed to mean something. I don't buy that. I find out-of-tune activities to be primarily unjustifiable.

Patricia Barber is an exception, by far one of the greatest one. The song - Regular Pleasures, where I remember finding her voice first, has this strange overpowering heavy-bass rhythm. Her hushy-voice with rather simple lyrics emits a signature quality of her music. It was only through this serendipity that I revisited this song, a long forgotten song that I had discovered in the first years of my juvenility. It only meant immaculate love back then and that is all it invoked.

Now, when I listen to it, the beginning is Irish influences. it reminds me of the bit of a folk-style, then the music builds up, the harmonies and orchestra evoke perceptions of eventualities, and overturns of time. The same music means different things now, a lot more things than it used. I feel I have stopped believing in the purest form of love, because I am unable. It feels as if I am incapable of feeling music purely too, because of this nature of analyzing things till it achieves meaninglessness. This vanity of having known things kills emotions, this illusion of having understood reality obscures experiences and poisons innocence. I think I understand now what Etienne gilson meant when he talked about responsibilities of an artist.

Antoni Dvorak - Symphony 9 in E minor

http://w3.rz-berlin.mpg.de/cmp/dvorak_sym9.html

- the grandeur of romantic era

Bossa Nova

Its only recently that I have started to realize that rhythm can be more important than notes in music. To some, rhythm is everything in music, but it was not as important to me. I mean, you can't imagine music out of rhythm, but I didn't understand how a certain rhythm would be more important than patterns of notes. It could be so because I am not so much of a dance person, or it could be just my ignorance to think that there is very little of creative ability in rhythms or that rhythms are only meant to accompany the rise and fall of notes.

It is funny indeed that I overlooked rhythm despite being from the country of 'tabla'. It could also be that I didn't even realize that rhythm-instruments are different because of tabla being a harmonic instrument too, unlike drums. Either way, I have discovered that rhythms are more than what inspires / provokes us to get on the dance floor. There is surely a lot of creativity that goes in rhythm.

Western music has discovered it twice or more i guess, first time playing with bossa-nova and the second time, dancing on hip-hop. Me, i would just stick to bossa nova for now; I think bossa nova is the best exhibition of rhythms. With French lyrics, I think some of the best pieces of what we know of music has been created on bossa nova.

(Recently I discovered bands like momotte, which are reliving the 60s in some way)

Unbelievable...

I linger between metal and classical while listening to online radio, quite extreme choices one would think, but that is my music taste.

Slowly over time, what last.fm did noticing this taste of mine was to introduce symphonic metal bands like Ensiferum to me that are somewhate half-way between Dmitri Shastakovsky and Dimmu Borgir. Even if I didn't know how to play this instrument I would have loved it as much as I do... because in my head, I don't know when does the appreciation of beauty end and the will to inquire for meaning begins. Its all so much the same for me.

To me, loving music is same as loving math or liking art. May be thats the reason why I somewhat hate using math as a professional skill either - the way music is best done without the pressure of performance, I think math is best done without the desire for a specific solution.

From Pandora with love...

I found these bands on myspace/last.fm that I hadn't heard of before, due to Pandora. I have to get some training from somewhere, but thats not gonna happen before I decide what I am going to do for the next year. And even if I am relaxing for a few more years (doing a phd or something) drums would be one of the last items on my list.

Meanwhile discovered pandora, and man! what a tool that is- fetches favorite artists out of my head. Seeded michelle branch, alanis morrisette, the corrs, vanessa carlton and got:

1. natalie imgruglia
2. Avril lavigne
3. girls aloud
4. britney spears
5. alice peacock

all by pandora automatically.

To someone who doesn't know either music or computer science, this would be far more fantastic - seems like we are getting closer to understanding how brain works. These songs above are all same kinda music in my head. I could associate adjectives like , "usual pop music", "girly stuff" or something equivalent.

What I could do next is to provide natalie imbruglia, girls aloud, britney as seed and check if i can get the seeds from previous experiments. There is no reason why the results wouldn't be same.

Just starting with Led zep as seed, you get ac/dc, black keys, kiss, rolling stones. If the program is honest (that if it doesn't hardcode the connection between ledzep and ac/dc) this is a great accompolishment of the project.

Anyways, my stations:

Groovy:
http://www.pandora.com/?sc=sh30503340
Metal:
http://www.pandora.com/?sc=sh30464179
Soft Rock:
http://www.pandora.com/?sc=sh30509997
Pop:
http://www.pandora.com/?sc=sh30720912
Grunge:
http://www.pandora.com/?sc=sh30441948
Latin:
http://www.pandora.com/?sc=sh133716561161130668
Classic:
http://www.pandora.com/?sc=sh132249619376149164

Its not too hard to improvise on Indian raagas. Being the North Indian that I am, I find it very natural to improvise on hindustani raagas. It resembles more with the Arabic music than Indian, and can be very unpredictably off-the-mainstream at times.

It sure is fun, I think it would require proper training in Blues to really acquire the fine blues improvisation skill. I would call this song sunlight, and then try to figure out how to bring the mood from gaiety to fear and doubt.

Dadd9 Cadd9 Bbadd9 Dm
F Am Bbadd9 Dm

Note-
Dm - D F A
Dadd9 - D A E

hammerhead

I am not a drummer. Despite being admittedly poor at rhythms, I've been playing rhythm guitar in my band. But I don't seem to be a rhythm guy anyhow. I like picking chords and licks, instead. I am more towards understanding and creating music.

Anyways, I had abandoned metronome for a long time now, before i discovered this tool called hammer-head. I set up a few rhythms, that I would have liked the drummer to play, and practised the guitar with it. Its so easy to prepare and play rhythms on the software - enormous possiblities without much of en effort (thanks to the sound cards)!

Hoping to write/play some good stuff very soon. A few junoon songs would be OK ! :)

for the guitar

The point being I thought I would create a list of songs, which I still want to play on my guitar. It would be rest of the Beatles, rollingstones, some led zep, and possibly some metal too, if i) I get a better processor ii) convince the singers in my band to do some metal.
Before that happens, i would mention a few songs that I played for the first time, recently, and a few that I still wish to play.

What i did yesterday, was the famous led zep song, rockn'roll - one of the easiest and greatest songs, I would have ever played -the kind of music where you get kicks from.

It won't be long before I get into blues very well. even the Before you accused me - sounds so cool.
wish list for now:

1. i got two tickets for the paradise.
2. black dog- ledzepp
3.
